Frequently Asked Questions

Can mental health issues arise after TBI?

Yes, TBIs can increase the risk of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, irritability, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These changes may result from both biological brain changes and the emotional impact of injury.

Mental health symptoms may appear immediately or develop later during recovery. They can be intensified by prolonged symptoms, loss of function, or disruption to work, school, or relationships.

Early recognition and treatment are important. Counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, and, when appropriate, medication can significantly improve emotional well-being and recovery outcomes.
