Frequently Asked Questions
Can TBI affect sleep?
Sleep disturbances are very common after TBI and may include insomnia, excessive sleepiness, frequent waking, or altered sleep–wake cycles. Sleep problems can worsen other concussion symptoms and slow recovery.
Disrupted sleep may result from changes in brain chemistry, pain, anxiety, or altered circadian rhythms. Poor sleep can amplify headaches, mood changes, and cognitive difficulties.
Improving sleep hygiene, addressing pain or stress, and maintaining consistent routines are key. Persistent sleep issues should be addressed medically, as sleep is critical for brain healing.
