Frequently Asked Questions
Are TBIs linked to dementia?
Severe TBIs and repeated head injuries have been associated with an increased risk of dementia later in life. This risk appears higher in individuals with multiple injuries or prolonged loss of consciousness.
A single mild concussion does not appear to significantly increase dementia risk for most people. However, cumulative exposure to brain trauma may contribute to long-term neurodegenerative changes.
Protecting brain health across the lifespan—through injury prevention, early treatment, and cognitive engagement—remains an important strategy for reducing future risk.
