Frequently Asked Questions
Can concussion affect speech?
Yes, concussions can affect smell and taste, particularly if the frontal or temporal lobes are involved. These senses rely on delicate nerve pathways that can be disrupted by sudden brain movement.
Loss of smell (anosmia) or altered taste may be temporary or, in some cases, long-lasting. Changes may be subtle, such as reduced sensitivity, or more noticeable, like complete loss.
Because smell plays an important role in safety and quality of life, persistent changes should be evaluated. Recovery may take weeks to months, depending on the extent of nerve disruption.
