Frequently Asked Questions

What are emotional symptoms?

Emotional symptoms after concussion can include irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression, and emotional sensitivity. These changes occur because the injury temporarily disrupts brain areas involved in emotional regulation. Even individuals with no prior mental health history may experience these symptoms.

Emotional changes can be particularly distressing because they may feel unfamiliar or out of character. Frustration may also arise from cognitive difficulties or physical symptoms, further intensifying emotional reactions. These symptoms are common and do not indicate weakness or permanent damage.

Most emotional symptoms improve as the brain heals, but support is important. Reassurance, reduced stress, good sleep, and gradual return to activities can help stabilize mood. Persistent or worsening emotional symptoms should prompt further medical or mental health evaluation.
