Frequently Asked Questions
What are cognitive symptoms?
Cognitive symptoms include difficulty concentrating, memory problems, slowed thinking, and feeling mentally “foggy.” Tasks that were once easy—such as reading, problem-solving, or multitasking—may suddenly feel exhausting or overwhelming.
These symptoms reflect temporary changes in how brain cells communicate after injury. Even mild cognitive strain can worsen symptoms early in recovery, which is why cognitive rest and gradual reintroduction of mental activity are recommended.
Cognitive symptoms usually improve over time, but recovery may be uneven. Structured support, such as reduced school or work demands and scheduled breaks, helps prevent symptom exacerbation and promotes healing.
