Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between TBI and concussion?
TBI is a broad category of brain injuries caused by external mechanical forces, whereas a concussion is a specific type of mild TBI. Concussions generally involve temporary functional disturbances rather than permanent structural damage, although the symptoms can be disabling and affect daily activities.
Moderate and severe TBIs may involve visible changes on imaging, such as bleeding, contusions, or skull fractures, and often require hospitalization and intensive medical care. Concussions, in contrast, often cannot be seen on routine imaging and are diagnosed primarily based on symptoms and clinical evaluation.
Understanding this distinction is important because the treatment and recovery approach differs. Mild TBIs like concussions usually require short-term rest, gradual activity, and symptom monitoring, whereas more severe TBIs may necessitate surgery, rehabilitation, or long-term care to address cognitive, physical, and emotional impairments.
