Frequently Asked Questions

Is rest required after concussion?

Rest is important immediately after a concussion, especially during the first 24–48 hours. This includes both physical and cognitive rest, allowing the brain time to stabilize and begin healing.

However, prolonged or complete rest beyond the early phase can slow recovery. Current evidence supports a gradual return to light activity as tolerated, avoiding anything that significantly worsens symptoms.

The goal is “relative rest,” not total inactivity. Balancing rest with gentle movement and mental engagement helps promote recovery while preventing deconditioning and isolation.
