Frequently Asked Questions
Can concussions cause permanent damage?
Yes, most concussions occur without any loss of consciousness. Only a small percentage of concussions involve brief unconsciousness. Instead, the hallmark signs include confusion, dizziness, headache, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may appear dazed or “out of it,” which can sometimes be mistaken for mild fatigue or disorientation.
The absence of unconsciousness does not make the injury less serious. Even mild concussions can disrupt cognitive function and balance, and repeated injuries without proper recovery can cause cumulative brain damage. Medical evaluation is necessary to assess the severity and monitor for complications.
Parents, coaches, and caregivers should be aware that subtle symptoms—like irritability, slowed responses, or difficulty focusing—can indicate a concussion even if the person never passed out. Prompt recognition and rest are key to preventing longer-term problems and ensuring full recovery.
