Frequently Asked Questions

Can concussions cause permanent damage?

Most single concussions heal completely with rest and proper management, and individuals often return to baseline function within days to weeks. However, repeated concussions, especially without adequate recovery, can cause cumulative brain injury, leading to long-term cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments.

Permanent damage is more likely in moderate or severe TBIs, where bleeding, swelling, or structural changes occur. Even mild TBIs can contribute to chronic issues like headaches, memory problems, mood disorders, or balance difficulties if recovery is incomplete.

Preventing additional injuries is critical. Proper management, gradual return to activity, and education about symptoms help reduce the risk of long-term consequences. For high-risk individuals, such as athletes or military personnel, strict protocols and monitoring are essential to protect brain health over time.
